Let us consider,

A rectangle of dimension 5 × 3 units and a square of dimension 3 × 3 units.

Graphically,

We plot the rectangle and square on co-ordinate grid and count the number of blocks lying at the outside of the figures. These blocks will given us the perimeter of the figures.

1. Rectangle ABCD

The blocks at the corners of the rectangle are made up both the length and the width of the rectangle. So, they will be counted twice.

Number of blocks for rectangle ABCD = 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16

Thus, the perimeter of the rectangle ABCD is 16 units.

2. Square EFGH

The blocks at the corners of the square are made up both the lengths of the square. So, they will be counted twice.

Number of blocks for square EFGH = 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12

Thus, the perimeter of the square EFGH is 12 units.
