It could result in a possible collapse of the ecosystem. Upwelling regions are the most productive and species rich areas in the world; in these ecosystems, every species present plays a vital role in the functioning of that ecosystem. If one species is significantly depleted, that will have an effect throughout the rest of the trophic levels.
