Fear.

Pope commanded Christian followers to burn Pagan temples and build in the same site of the burned Pagan temple a Christian church in attempt to convert Pagans into the Christian faith.

Christians began to preach the devil and being identical to the Pagan God, Hunter.

There's a lot of reasons but majority of it could be listed as fear.

Pagans, those who usually help beliefs other than common ones. They were attracted to the idea of Christianity because of the ideology.
