He has 30 and gets rid of 4 so 26 cookies then gets rid of 8 more, so then 18 cookies left.

Ok
P = 30 (P is for Patrick)
=> P= 30 - 4
=> P= 26
=> P= 26 - 8
=> P= 18
=> Patrick has 18 Left
