The three things that essentially make up a market economy are:

-Buyers
-Sellers
-Goods

If 1 of the three things are missing, there is no way a market economy can function. The rule of supply and demand comes into play here as well, as if there are less goods to buy, and more people wanting to buy them, they will cost more. Also if there are more goods available for purchase and less people wanting to buy them, the price will cost less.
