You can ignore the parenthesis so you have
x + 2 + x + 2 + x + 4 + x + 4 (combine like terms)4x+12 (factor out the 4)4(x+3)

The x terms add up to 4x and the numbers add up to 12 .
4x + 12 = 4(x + 3)
