20 divided by 4 (20/4) is 5. and 17 is 3 away from 20. 3 over 4 is equal to 0.75 If you subtract 0.75 from 5 it gives you 4.25.

you can use estimation by saying that 4 * 4 = 16 and 4 * 5 = 20
therefore your number has to be less that 5 but slightly greater than 4.
you can check his exact answer by doing division or checking it on a calculator.
