What makes each type of atom different?

Each element differs by the number of protons it has.

Other than that, the atoms can differ in the number of neutrons and electrons, which changes their chemical properties and masses.

I'm not exactly sure what you meant by 'type,' so just clarify if you need me to explain something else.
