How did jefferson go against his own ideals with the Louisiana purchase

One of the things that Jefferson went against was that he didn't know what to do with the land. Yes, they wanted to expand and it would give them a great port but they didn't know if it would be good because it was 15 million (or 80 million francs) and they knew it would be hard to handle because it would be loose without anyone constantly watching over it.
