Life in the colonies was hard, and colonies that were short on natural resources often failed, with the inhabitants dying or moving somewhere else. The colonies that thrived were those abundant in natural resources. Wood was used to build houses and boats and to keep houses warm. Water was another important resource. Finally, sources of nourishment such as game and fish were also highly appreciated.
