How do mutations cause genetic variation?

Animals of the same species may have offspring with mutations. If these mutations are an advantage to the animal then it will survive to produce its own fertile offspring. More and more will have the mutation and therefore cause a variation.

Mutations lead to genetic variation by making random changes in an organism's genetic code. This can causes a different protein to be created or none at all.
