DNA helicase breaks hydrogen bonds between bases so the helix “unzips” for free RNA nucleotides to join on. DNA polymerase then zips up the DNA once the mRNA strand has formed. RNA polymerase binds to the DNA and creates the copy of the RNA strand during transcription by using the DNA strand as a template.
