-3x - 14 = 4
-3x - 14 + 14 = 4 + 14 (Added 14 on both sides, -14 cancels out)
-3x = 18 (Divide 18 by -3x)
x = -6

Arrange to have all the numbers on one side of the equation, all the letters on the other.

-3x - 14 = 4 Add 14 to both sides.
-3x - 14 + 14 =4 + 14
-3x = 18 [4 + 14 = 18] Now divide by - 3
-3x/-3 = 18/-3
x = -6 <<<< answer
An odd number of minus's when you multiply or divide, leaves you with a minus. In this question, there is one minus on the right. Therefore the answer to division will be minus. You should always leave the variable (a letter) as plus.
