Greece and Turkey were the first countries to receive aid under the Marshall Plan, partially to rebuild the countries but also to stop the spread of communism.

After World War II, the US and Soviet Union emerged as global superpowers. Both of these countries were trying to expand their political and economic power after this war. The US, fearful of the spread of communism and increased power of the Soviet Union, sent funds to Greece and Turkey. These countries were picked because they were close to the Soviet Union.
