When fired, the expanding gas deformed the bullet and engaged the barrel’s rifling, providing spin for better accuracy and longer range. Its design dramatically increased both range and accuracy, which has long been accepted as the reason for the high number of casualties in the Civil War.

Since they were new technology and innovations compared to previous innovations, they were used to cause more destruction.

Previous wars had less destructive weapons and weapons that typically caused more injuries instead of deaths. Because these new weapons were created for the sole purpose of killing, they were able to cause more death and destruction among the enemy.

Therefore, the new innovations created caused more deaths in the Civil War rather than previous wars as they were created solely to kill to win the war.

Hope this helps!
