This is called camouflage .

Camouflage is a type of deceptive coloration that can that help an organism blend in or hide in its surroundings. Camouflage can be colors or patterns or the combination of both. Organisms are not easy to find when they are camouflaged. Examples include big cats such as leopards, jaguars and cheetahs that have spots which help them blend into their environment. Also, the red squirrel has reddish-brown fur on top of it which makes it harder for predators to see the squirrel when it is on the ground.
