The Freedmen's Bureau, established in 1865, helped to create schools in order to educate former slaves. This bureau, created by the federal government, was aimed at helping former slaves during the era of Reconstruction. Besides educational opportunities, this agency also helped in providing medical care, housing, and legal assistance to former slaves.
