On June 11, 1776, a "Committee of Five" was named to draft a declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson was one of the five men appointed. The others were John Adams of Massachusetts, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, Robert R. Livingston of New York, and Roger Sherman of Connecticut.
