A. Dred Scott was a slave owned by an army surgeon based in Missouri. In 1846 Scott sued his masters widow for freedom on the grounds that the laws of Illinois and the Wisconsin Territory barred slavery.

 I would say the answer is A, because he did sue for his freedom it was just unsuccessful.
