The placenta and the umbilical cord are formed during the first trimester of pregnancy (during the embryogenesis).

The umbilical cord is developed from the yolk sac and allantois and it is formed by the fifth week of development.
The placenta is developed upon implantation of the blastocyst into the endometrium about 5–6 days after fertilization.
