As the Vietnam war dragged support for it waned especially from the Doves becasue many believed it was very expensive, costly a perpetual war. increased expenditure in a foreign country was consistently blamed for any form of economic problem that propped up. the main reason was that it appeared as a war that could not be won; a perpetual war.
