The president pro tempore of the senate is the most senior senator in the senate chosen by the senate. This office is the second highest office in the senate. The highest office is the president of the senate which is held by the Vice President of the United States. Senate pro tempore assumes the duties of the president of the senate when he is unavailable. The office of pro tempore is explained in Article1, section 3 of the US Constitution.
