At the beginning of Kafka´s novella, Gregor finds himself turned into a hideous bug. For that reason, he cannot go to work, which preoccupies him since he is the sole breadwinner in his house. As he is coming to terms with his new bodily condition, he hears the chief clerk from his office arriving in his house to see why is Gregor late to work, and, one can surmise, to fire him. When the clerk sees him turned into a bug, he leaves the house horrified, and the novella begins the series of unfortunate events that Kafka so soberly explores therein.
