Magnitude moment (M) is calculated using the following equation;

M= 2/3 log (Mo) - 10.7, Where Mo = Moment

Now, moment (Mo) = Shear modulus of earth's crust*Area*average displacement during rapture.

Therefore, moment magnitude is based on shear modulus of crust, area considered and average displacement during rapture.
