Makes it more diverse bringing in many Irish as well as other white immigrant groups.
California had been primarily Mexicans left over from the Mexican-American War and some Chinese from railroad production. The gold rush brought poor immigrants to California hoping to strike it rich. The Irish were the largest immigrant group to arrive.
