The Cuban Missile Crisis almost brought the United States and the Soviet Union into an all out nuclear war. This was because the United States intercepted information about Russian nuclear warheads moving into Cuba by boat. This was a big red flag to the US because if the Soviet Union were to launch nuclear missiles from Cuba there wouldn't be enough time to blow them up in flight because of how close it is to Florida.
