Joseph Stalin applied dictatorship in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from 1929 to 1953. He transformed the peasant society to an industrial and military power. He ruled by terror and use of total authoritarianism leading to the death of millions of people during his brutal reign. He expanded the powers of the secret police, encouraged the citizens to spy on one another, killed millions of people and sent others to camps.
