"Five times a number added to -4"
5x + (-4)
subtracted from...
"twice the sum of eight times the number and 7"
2(8x + 7)
5x - 4 - 2(8x + 7)
distribute the -2
5x - 4 - 16x - 14
combine like terms
-11x - 18
