$4.06 in sales tax before tax for $58
7% of $42 = 2.94
7% of $58 = 4.06

first we should find the percentage of the tax for the items Mike bought :

(42)/(100) = (2.94)/(x) \\ x = (2.94 * 100)/(42) = (294)/(42) = 7
the tax of the items are 7% of the price
so we find this percent for 58

(58)/(100) = (x)/(7) \\ x = (7 * 58)/(100) = (406)/(100) = 4.06
so now you can add the tax to the price:

58 + 4.06 = 62.06
hope you understand it
good luck
