The tone of the "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is horror, fear, regret and guilty since the Mariner had killed the Albatross. The Albatross represents good luck; it is a symbol of innocence and beauty. The Mariner had shot the bird and hung the dead albatross around his neck as a symbol of sin. As a punishment for killing the Albatross, the ancient Mariner was condemned to live to tell this tale by travelling from land to land.
