A total of 604 tickets were sold for the school play. They were either adult tickets or student tickets. There were 54 more student tickets sold than adult tickets. How many adult tickets were sold?

275 adult tickets

Set student tickets to be x and adult tickets to x - 54. Add together and set equal to 604. Then solve for x.
