Internment is the capture and imprisonment, typically in masses, without trial.

While that definition is vague, a good example of internment in US history would be Japanese Internment during World War II. It was a forced relocation of around 110,000 people of Japanese descent, many of whom resided on the West Coast. They lost their homes, possessions, and businesses, and very few of these were recovered once the war ended.
