A fault is a crack in the earth's surface along which movement occurs. Normal faults result from tension and they are different from reverse faults in that the inclination of the fault plane and the down throw are in the same direction. This also means that the hanging wall is depressed relative to the footwall. In reverse faults that hanging wall is raised relative to the footwall.
