Am certain that when a skeletal muscle generates enough force during contraction to the sarcomere and the I band will shorten. The skeletal muscles are under voluntary control. The nerve impulses that originate in the central nervous system cause muscles to contract. The actin and myosin filaments within the sarcomeres of muscles fibres bind to create cross-bridges and slide past one another, creating a contraction.
