They educated the chimpanzee washoe to converse by ways of sign language. Washoe was the matriarch of her family and was the first chimpanzee to obtain a human language. Her name sign is made with the fingers of a "W" hand flicking the ear on the similar side. She was baptized for Washoe region Nevada where she is alive with Drs. Allen and Beatrix Gardner up until age five.
