A set of stairs has a run of 10.25 inches and a rise of 7.25 inches. How much horizontal space is required to connect two floors, 3 feet 1/4 inch apart in height?

The 4 treads require 4*10.25 = 41 inches, but you also require landings at each level, adding perhaps 72 inches. (Building codes vary.)

Somewhere between 41 and 113 inches of horizontal space will be required, perhaps more.
