How does politics affect the level of inequality in the united states?

The United States political system is fragmented which removes the possibility of there being a safety net that would prevent inequality. This means that the disenfranchised are more likely to remain disenfranchised while the higher ranked members have a higher chance of rising even more, whether it be in political power or wealth.
