After Mao Zedong died in 1976, Deng Xiaoping became China’s leader and adopted "The Four Modernizations" as the country’s main goal.

The Four Modernizations were goals set by Deng Xiaoping to strengthen the sectors of agriculture, industry, national defense, and technology in order to increase economic growth in China, which had been interrupted during Mao's leadership. One of the actions he took to achieve the goal, was to develop good relations with some of the leading modern countries, including France, Japan, and the United States.
