The Olmecs existed about 1500 B.C. They were in the forests beside the rivers of Mexico's east coast. They powerfully influenced later cultures – many later groups of Native peoples cultured from the Olmec civilization. Consequently, the Olmecs are called the "mother civilization" of the Americas.
