Why did the Europeans and native Americans trade outside of the fort, instead of inside of it?

It was closest to neutral territory. Say the Natives were to attack. It’s really just more to make the other side feel as if they had a say in the interaction

There is a lower chance of the native Americans being attacked in the fort, and it also shows them the Europeans are willing to leave safety to trade.
