In order to read the information from a copy of mRNA, we need to read three bases one at a time. This set of three bases is called as a codon and each codon is specific for a particular amino acid. Let's put a gap between the codons, so that we could read them easily and find the respective amino acid.
mRNA strand: AUG AAG GGC UGA
amino acids: Methionine Lysine Glycine STOP codon
So there are three amino acids and one stop codon, which is like a signal for the cell to stop translation.
