What was the initial goal of apartheid

The purpose of apartheid was separation of the races: not only of whites from nonwhites, but also of nonwhites from each other, and, among the Africans (called Bantu in South Africa), of one group from another.

i believe the answer might be that It had the aim to relocate peoples displaced by the British for the purpose of mining to their land of "origin" (homelands). It was unpractical and failed.
