In humans, coral is sometimes used to replace sections of BONE. Human bone and the hard, rocky sections of the coral reef are both made of similar calcium compounds. They are the larges living structures on the planet. Corals take in dissolved CO2 along with other minerals from the ocean to secrete a hard rocky skeleton.

Coral reefs are also studied for their antibiotic and antiviral properties.
