Homes in the Dominican Republic are typically made of wood or cement.

These materials are used in the Barrios (neighborhood). This is because most people are quite poor so they need to use cheap material and easy to get. Most of the houses were built with no planning and more than one family can live in one place. Sometimes they have metal bars for thieves however, this is not a guarantee for the owners.
