Miss Violetta Thurstan was in charge of an Ambulance to take care of Injured soldiers. When it started she was placed in charged of a British Ambulance as a matron which was placed in Brussels. Barely had she and her staff touched base before the Belgian Government chose to offer to surrender and Germans took over the city. The vast majority of the staff were cleared, yet Miss Thurstan and a few medical attendants stayed in Brussels. Here she got an interest to help the British injured detainees after the Battle of Mons.
