A line segment has a set length (side A). By adding a perpendicular line segment (side B) to A, we create a right angle. Because we measure the the hypotenuse from A’s endpoint to B’s endpoint, the distance will always be greater than measuring from the endpoint of either side to the point of merger/connection.
