The correct option is D

On September 10, 1943, during the Second World War, the Germans occupied Rome. An occupation that lasted nine months and that was one of the worst periods in the recent history of this city.

On September 8, 1943, the signing by Italy of the armistice with the Anglo-American army had been made public. King Vittorio Emanuele III, together with his family, had fled the city, taking refuge in the South, in the city of Brindisi, in Apulia. Rome had been left alone, without a head of state, without a head of government and without military leaders. The soldiers and carabinieri, along with many citizens of Rome, left alone, decided to do the only thing that was possible: resist the Germans.
