Hello!

Let's have both sides represent y and x.

So x would represent the longer piece, and y the shorter.

x + y = 47

x = y + 13

ok so we know that x is basically y+13, and then you add another y to get 47.

y + 13 + y = 47

Combine like terms

2y + 13 = 47

2y = 47 - 13

And solve :)

2y = 34

y = 34/2

y = 17

Now remember, y is the shorter piece, we are looking for the longer piece. In order to do that, we plug y back into the equation to find x.

x = y + 13

x = 17 + 13

17+13 = 30 !!

Therefore,

x = 30

The long piece is 30 inches.
