Polish government imposed martial law in Poland to crush political opposition, this happened in March 1981. The martial law banned pro-democracy organizations and political movements - at that time Poland was a communist government and people were unhappy with it. This caused an economic crisis with price rises which forced the government to do a rationing of basic food.
