The Populist Party campaigned for social reforms to help farmers and agrarian workers.

This left-wing party was founded in 1891 and it became an important force in the south of the United States; however, in 1896 the Populist Party turned into the Democratic Party after the populists and the labor movement became allies.

Farmers fought for social reforms as a way of defending workers' rights and going against the interests of the banking elite, which had been the main responsible for increasing the levels of poverty among the working class.
